South Fayette Township is one of 26 communities statewide to achieve the Gold level through the voluntary Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification program.

“Being recognized as a sustainable community means we are making progress in the areas of economic development, social equity and environmental quality,” said Andrea Iglar, township Community Development Director and member of the Steering Committee for the Sustainable Community Development Network of Southwest Pennsylvania.

“When all three pillars are strong, the community prospers.”

The rigorous review process covered 131 policies and procedures addressing areas such as community design and land use, community engagement, health and wellness, intergovernmental cooperation, recycling and waste reduction, fiscal controls, and internal management and operations.

The Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification, administered by the Pennsylvania Municipal League in partnership with Sustainable Pittsburgh, recognizes municipalities and encourages them to share their best practices with other communities.

"Municipalities that earn the Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification are standouts in demonstrating adherence to best practices that elevate them as communities of choice to live, work, and play. Commitment to continuous improvement is at the heart of sustainability," said Court Gould, Executive Director of Sustainable Pittsburgh.
