Preventing Home Invasions

Recently, there have been several reports of home invasions in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. A home invasion is when a person or persons enter a residence with or without permission, with the intent to commit a crime within that person's residence and deprive them of their property.

Tips

  • Do not let person(s) inside your home without proper identification.
  • If you are not sure, call the company immediately and ask if they have employees in the area. A legitimate employer or company will understand.
  • Most legitimate businesses work between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and will contact you if they need to check a meter or will call you if they need to come at a later time.
  • If in doubt, check with the Better Business Bureau.
  • In South Fayette Township, solicitors are required to obtain a solicitation permit at the township office. This permit will include the person's picture.
  • Contact South Fayette Police by dialing 911, if anything seems suspicious - it's better to be safe than sorry.
  • Don't hesitate to contact the police - err on the side of Caution.
