[ARCHIVED] Section of Panhandle Trail closed Oct. 7 and Oct. 8

UPDATE (10/6/25): The 1.8-mile section of the Panhandle Trail that was paved is open Mon. Oct. 6 and then closed Tues. Oct. 7 and Wed. Oct. 8 for restoration work, weather permitting.

UPDATE (9/30/25): A 1.8-mile section of the Panhandle Trail in South Fayette is closed for paving and related work Sept. 22 through Oct. 1; open Oct. 2 through Oct. 5; and then closed on Mon. Oct. 6. The portion spans from the McDonald border, through Sturgeon, to the Mill St/Scotch Hill Rd crossing.

A 1.8-mile section of the Panhandle Trail in South Fayette Township is closed from Mon. Sept. 22 through Tues. Sept. 30, 2025, for repairs and paving.

The portion spans from the McDonald Borough border, through the Sturgeon trailhead, to the Mill Street/Scotch Hill Road crossing at the North Fayette border. Please respect all barriers and avoid pedestrian, cycling and other uses on this trail section during the work.

The $247,370 project to replace crushed limestone with asphalt pavement is being conducted by contractor Mele & Mele & Sons, Inc. on behalf of South Fayette Township, which has secured a $130,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to partially fund the work.

In the future, the township plans to pave the remaining portions of trail within South Fayette, in partnership with Oakdale Borough and North Fayette Township. A total of 2.73 miles of the trail are located in South Fayette, from mile markers 3.04 to 6.49, between McDonald and Collier, with North Fayette and Oakdale portions interspersed.
