[ARCHIVED] Rabies vaccine baiting occurs July 31 to Aug. 17

Rabies Vaccination Notice 2020

The Allegheny County Health Department and U.S. Department of Agriculture are distributing vaccine-containing raccoon baits throughout Allegheny County from July 31 through Aug. 17, 2020.

Hand baiting from ground vehicles is planned for July 31 to Aug. 10, and helicopter baiting is scheduled for Aug. 10 to Aug. 17. Residents may see helicopters moving slowly over the same area multiple times within a short period.

The risk of adverse effects to human and animals is minimal, but the health department urges the public to avoid human and pet contact with the bait if possible.

Permit holders for the off-leash dog zone in Fairview Park in South Fayette Township should be especially cautious that their dogs avoid the baits. Also, keep dogs and cats on a leash, indoors or confined to their property as much as possible during the baiting and for a week afterward.

If you must move a stray bait, you should pick it up using a shovel or a rubber or latex glove.

Most of the baits should be consumed by raccoons about five days after being distributed.
