The Allegheny County Health Department has revised its Open Burning Regulation, which South Fayette Township follows and enforces. Highlights of the rules include:

--Starting in 2015, the definition of open burning includes any fire or combustion occurring in a fire pit, outdoor fireplace, chiminea or grill.
--Fires are limited to a maximum overall size of 3 feet wide by 3 feet long by 2 feet high for wood burning.
--Materials permitted in open burning are clean wood, propane or natural gas, with exceptions that allow for using charcoal in outdoor fireplaces or grills for cooking, and for using fire logs, paraffin logs or wood pellets in outdoor fireplaces.
